I am Dr Tom Richards, a Consultant Clinical Oncologist currently working at University College London Hospital (UCLH) NHS Trust and The Whittington NHS Hospital. I also see patients privately at several other clinics. I have extensive experience in managing and treating gastrointestinal (GI) and breast cancers. In my daily practice, I treat cancers of the oesophagus, stomach, liver, pancreaticobiliary, colorectal, and breast. I am proficient in a wide range of procedures, including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and biological targeted therapies. I have a special interest in advanced radiotherapy techniques such as CyberKnife, intensity-modulated radiotherapy, 4D-CT planning, deep inspiratory breath-hold, image-guided radiotherapy, and proton beam therapy.
I graduated from Imperial College School of Medicine before beginning my specialist training in general internal medicine at King’s College Hospital in London. I later pursued oncology training in 2015 at St Bartholomew’s and The Royal Marsden Hospitals. During my training, I completed a research degree at The Institute of Cancer Research, investigating the mechanisms by which therapeutic radiation affects normal tissues, as well as strategies to detect and reduce late toxicity after curative treatment. This work earned me a PhD, and in 2012, I was honoured with the Johnson and Johnson Clinical Research Prize for my research contributions. Following my training, I was appointed as a Clinical Oncology Consultant at St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London NHS Hospitals.
I am a member of several professional organisations, including The Royal College of Physicians, ESMO, and ESTRO. I have also been appointed a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists. My engagement with the scientific community includes chairing and speaking at international conferences and meetings. I am also dedicated to education, serving as a course tutor and examiner for an MSc course at The Institute of Cancer Research. Additionally, I am the local principal investigator for several GI cancer clinical trials.
