Proton beam therapy for Kuwait patients

At Proton International London, we welcome patients from Kuwait for proton beam therapy.

What is proton beam therapy?

Proton beam therapy (PBT) is a highly effective treatment for destroying cancer cells. Unlike traditional radiotherapy, which uses high-energy X-rays, PBT uses protons, which are directed towards the treatment area with a specialist proton beam machine. The dose can be very carefully controlled, which helps protect the surrounding healthy cells and vital organs. This makes it very helpful for treating children and cancers that occur in sensitive areas, such as brain, and head and neck cancers. The precision helps reduce the risk of possible side effects that affect quality of life, both during treatment and in the years that follow.

Practical support for you and your family

We know that travelling to another country for treatment is a significant commitment for the whole family. To make the experience as smooth as possible, we offer support throughout the entire process.

Treatment at our proton beam therapy centre in London takes place each weekday over several weeks. The length of treatment is set individually, but most patients should plan for around five to seven weeks in London once planning scans, treatment sessions and short follow-up are taken into account.

  1. Oncologist referral – Your treating oncologist in Kuwait, or a doctor acting on your behalf, sends a referral to our team in London along with your relevant medical information.
  2. Remote assessment – Our consultant oncologists review your case via a secure video consultation with you and your doctors, so you can begin the conversation without travelling.
  3. Logistics and visa – Once treatment is agreed, your dedicated team will help you with travel arrangements, visa guidance and accommodation suitable for you and your family.
  4. Treatment planning – When you arrive in London, our clinical team prepares your individual treatment plan, including planning scans and a clear schedule for the weeks ahead.
  5. During treatment – Your proton beam therapy will be delivered Monday to Friday over several weeks, with continuous support from our multidisciplinary team. On occasion, you may be offered treatment on a weekend day, if a treatment day has been missed in the week for any reason. The exact length of treatment varies, but most patients should expect to be in London for around five to seven weeks in total, allowing additional time for planning scans, creating a PBT treatment plan, treatment delivery and a short follow-up. Find out more about what to expect when having proton beam therapy.
  6. Post-treatment – Before you return home, we will explain what to expect after treatment and share the relevant treatment information with your medical team in Kuwait. We will also advise on longer-term monitoring, so your ongoing care can continue safely once you are back home.

Where treatment is being arranged or sponsored through the Kuwait Ministry of Health, our team can work directly with the relevant department, and with any medical attachés based in the UK, to coordinate documentation, approvals and reporting. This is intended to take the administrative weight off your shoulders, so you and your family can focus on your treatment.
