Proton International London announces Bupa approval for 5 fraction proton beam therapy for prostate cancer

Advanced proton beam therapy centre for prostate cancer

Proton International London is pleased to announce that Bupa UK has approved funding for its new 5 fraction proton beam therapy pathway for the treatment of prostate cancer.

This means that eligible Bupa members can now access this shorter, highly targeted treatment option as part of their private medical cover, making proton beam therapy more accessible than ever for men diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Wider access to a faster treatment option for Bupa members

Until recently, men exploring proton beam therapy for prostate cancer often had to navigate complex funding arrangements or self-fund part of their care. With Bupa now approving the 5 fraction pathway, eligible members can access this treatment through their existing health insurance, subject to the terms of their policy and clinical suitability.

For many men, this represents a meaningful step forward in choice and accessibility, allowing them to consider proton beam therapy alongside other treatment options recommended by their consultant.

This approval can offer Bupa members:

  • Access to proton beam therapy through their existing private medical cover
  • A shorter treatment schedule completed in just two weeks
  • Fewer hospital visits and less disruption to daily life
  • Consultant-led care from the start of the referral process
  • Support with approval, logistics and ongoing care from a dedicated team

What the 5 fraction pathway involves

The 5 fraction approach condenses prostate cancer treatment into five carefully planned proton beam therapy sessions, delivered over approximately two weeks. For men who are suitable, this allows treatment to be completed more quickly while maintaining the precision and targeted delivery that proton beam therapy is known for.

Suitability for the 5 fraction pathway is determined through consultant assessment, taking into account the individual’s diagnosis, clinical profile and personal preferences. Where the 5 fraction option is not appropriate, alternative schedules are available, ranging from 5 to 38 sessions over 2 to 8 weeks.

Consultant-led care, supported every step of the way

All treatment at Proton International London is consultant-led and supported by a dedicated team which guides patients through insurance approval, scheduling, accommodation arrangements and ongoing care. For Bupa members, the team works directly with the insurer to help make the referral and approval process as straightforward as possible.

Tina Dunworth, COO, Proton International London, said:

“We are delighted that Bupa has approved funding for our 5 fraction proton beam therapy pathway for prostate cancer. This is an important step in widening access to proton beam therapy in the UK, and it means that many more men will be able to consider this option as part of their treatment discussions with their consultant.
Our priority remains delivering consultant-led, highly targeted care tailored to each individual. Working alongside Bupa allows us to make that care more accessible to their members, with the same standard of clinical precision, personal support and patient experience that defines everything we do.”
