What is proton beam therapy for prostate cancer?
Proton beam therapy uses highly targeted proton beams to kill cancer cells. Unlike traditional radiation therapy, PBT’s precision helps minimise damage to surrounding tissue and reduce the chance of side effects like erectile dysfunction and bowel issues.

How our specialists work together to provide prostate cancer care
At Proton International London, we take a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to prostate cancer care, bringing together clinical oncologists, radiologists, medical physicists and specialist radiographers.
Not all prostate cancer patients are suitable for proton beam therapy, so this collaborative approach is particularly important.
They will take the following into account to help refine treatment planning:
- Your overall health
- Your individual priorities (such as preserving quality of life)
- Pathology (e.g. results of biopsies show how aggressive cancer cells are to help guide treatment intensity)
- Imaging (such as MRI scans)
- Tumour characteristics (such as stage and grade)
- Prior treatments
- Risk factor
- Tumour genomics (i.e., the specific genes and mutations within the tumour)
All of this will inform your bespoke treatment plan.
From there, the team undertakes highly precise radiotherapy planning to define the exact treatment area and protect surrounding healthy tissues such as the bladder and rectum.
Throughout treatment and beyond, our team remains closely involved in your care, monitoring progress, managing any side effects, and supporting your recovery.
Can I get a second opinion from your prostate cancer specialists?
If you feel you need to, you can request a second opinion from our Consultant Clinical Oncologists. This can be an important step in further understanding your diagnosis and exploring all available treatment options.
During a second opinion review, our specialists will assess your existing scans, pathology results and treatment history, and provide clear, evidence-based guidance on the options available to you, including proton beam therapy if appropriate.
